The W&OD Overpass Across Wiehle Avenue is Nearly Complete

It's been a long time coming but it's so close now I can almost taste it.

It’s so close I can taste it.

In just a few short days, the bridge section of the W&OD overpass across Wiehle Avenue will be in place.

But don’t jump the gun just yet. Cyclists and joggers can expect to continue their game of Frogger with car traffic until the project is complete in July 2024.

Believe it or not, this project is on schedule. I know, right?!

The land for the project was acquired back in November 2021, so as infrastructure projects in this country go, you could call that lightning fast.

If it feels longer than the last three years of construction, that’s because the first hearing on the project was held way back in March 2016.

Ultimately, it’s taken 8-plus years and an estimated $12 Million to finish a project that ought to have been started even 8 years earlier.

But, hey, it’s better late than never, and it’s hard to argue that this isn’t a win for all road users.

What do you think? Will you benefit more as a W&OD trail user or as a Wiehle Avenue user?

Did you know: Reston is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The first family moved into Reston in December of 1964 near the Lake Anne Village Center.

AROUND TOWN

Interim upgrades: The Reston Regional Library is getting some much-needed interim upgrades while we wait for the great overhaul of RTC North.

Bounce back: You may be surprised to learn that Reston Town Center is close to 100% occupancy, according to Boston Properties. Despite the paid parking uproar, RTC seems to have bounced back.

Making a difference: For the second year in a row, the NICU at Reston Hospital Center has been recognized for being among the top 5 percent of healthcare service delivery.

Smokey the Bear: Don’t be surprised to see billowing smoke to your North as you drive along the Dulles Toll Road this week. Wolf Trap National Park will be conducting a prescribed fire to control invasive plants and make the forest more hospitable to native species.

Founder’s Day

Did you get a chance to visit Lake Anne last Saturday? If not, you missed the 20th anniversary of Founder’s Day, which celebrated the 60th anniversary of Reston’s founding (say that three times fast, why don’t you?). The event is held on or around the birthday of our town’s founder, Robert E. Simon, who’s birthday was April 10.

This year, dozens of Reston authors signed their books and engaged with the community, singing and dancing on the plaza stage (aka church steps). A good time was had by all despite the gray and chilly day. Click on the video below to get an idea for the vibe.
